Bridging the Nature Gap

Access to nature isn’t equal, and many families—especially in low-income communities and communities of color—face barriers to enjoying its benefits. From safety concerns to a lack of green spaces, these challenges create what’s called the “nature gap.”

The nature gap didn’t happen by accident. Policies like redlining, the placement of polluting industries in marginalized neighborhoods, and the exclusion of BIPOC communities from public lands have limited access to safe, healthy outdoor spaces. These systemic barriers still affect many families today.

Why It Matters for Kids

Time in nature helps kids thrive! Studies show outdoor play improves:

  • Health (less stress, stronger bodies).

  • Focus and problem-solving skills.

  • Social and emotional growth.

Yet, unequal access to natural spaces means many children miss out on these benefits.

Simple Steps to Close the Gap

  • Support programs that bring nature to kids and families.

  • Create and maintain safe green spaces in every neighborhood.

  • Teach children about conservation and equity.

Together, we can ensure all kids experience the joy and wonder of nature.
