DIY Upcycled Orange Rind Bird Feeders: A Fun and Eco-Friendly Craft for Kids!

Looking for a simple, eco-friendly craft that kids will love and benefits your local wildlife? These upcycled orange rind bird feeders are a perfect way to combine creativity with nature care. Using just a few household items, you and your little ones can create beautiful, biodegradable feeders that will attract feathered friends to your yard.

Why Upcycle?

Upcycling is a great way to reduce waste while giving new life to everyday items. In this project, we repurpose orange rinds that would otherwise be tossed out, turning them into natural, compostable bird feeders. It’s a win-win: less waste for the landfill and more food for the birds!

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Orange rinds: Halved and scooped out (as shown in the photo).

  • Twine: For hanging the feeders on tree branches.

  • Bird seed: Any mix will do—just make sure it’s safe for local birds. We prefer an allergen free brand like Wallis John's.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Orange Rinds: Start by cutting an orange in half and scooping out the fruit. You can enjoy a healthy snack while you're at it! Be sure to leave the rind intact so it can hold the bird seed.

  2. Poke Holes for Hanging: Using a toothpick, skewer, or the tip of scissors, carefully poke two small holes on opposite sides of each orange half. This is where you’ll thread the twine.

  3. Add the Twine: Cut a piece of twine, thread it through the holes, and tie the ends together to create a loop for hanging. Make sure the knot is secure so the feeder can hold the weight of the seeds and birds.

  4. Fill with Bird Seed: Place your orange rinds on a flat surface and fill them with bird seed. Don’t overfill—just enough to attract your neighborhood birds without spilling.

  5. Hang and Enjoy: Find a sturdy branch in your yard or nearby park and hang your new feeders. Then, sit back and watch as birds come by for a snack!

Why This Craft is Perfect for Kids:

  • Hands-On Learning: This project offers a chance to talk about upcycling, wildlife, and caring for the environment.

  • Sensory Play: Scooping, threading, and filling engages fine motor skills and senses.I

  • Instant Gratification: Kids will love seeing the birds enjoy their handmade feeders!

Bonus Ideas:

  1. Experiment with Citrus: Try using grapefruit rinds for larger feeders or even lemon rinds for smaller ones.

  2. Decorate: Let kids paint or decorate the outside of the rinds with natural, non-toxic paints before filling them.

  3. Bird Watching Journal: Encourage kids to keep a journal of the different bird species that visit their feeders.
